Every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., the Wine Shop hosts themed wine tastings where guests may acquaint themselves with new wines and develop their wine knowledge. The fee is $20, and we pour approximately 8 wines. Enjoy dinner with your tasting and receive a $5 credit towards any entree of your choice over $11. Seating is limited, so please try to arrive early. We start pouring promptly at 6:30 p.m.

"With the October 6, 2009 release of his latest - and possibly greatest - work, Is And Always Was, Daniel Johnston adds another chapter to his artistic legend.
Is And Always Was is a decided step away from the lo-fi homemade recordings for which Johnston is famous. "Everyone needs to take their demos and go back to the studio," says Daniel.

On this album, Daniel allied with the musician and producer Jason Falkner, who is known for his own stellar solo career as well as his work with Beck, Air, and Paul McCartney. With Jason manning the boards, "Is And Always Was" was a project that aimed to take the rock and roll symphonies in Daniel's prolific musical brain and deliver fully-realized and professionally-produced recorded songs. "He possesses that rare individuality that makes the listener wonder where this music comes from," Falkner says of Daniel Johnston. "It was challenging to make our minds work together but I really found myself immersed in his musical world. It's a unique place to live, that's for sure!"

Apologies for the gratuitous copy/paste job, but I had to share. Core77's elegantly designed road bike...classic beauty.

Today, Core77 proudly introduces a limited edition bicycle—named the "Dutch Master"—celebrating New York bike culture and a heritage of local manufacturing.

The Dutch Master is based on the beloved Worksman cruiser frame—a workhorse foundation used throughout the New York delivery community, and manufactured in Queens, New York for over 110 years. Core77 customized the frame, fitting it out with a carefully curated set of components, each with its own story.

The bike was hand-built by KT Higgins, a Brooklyn-based ex-bike messenger (infamous for her crash in the movie Pedal), and proprietor of Bushwick Bike Shop, her one-year-old bikeshop in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn.

The Dutch Master features stem and pedals from Brooklyn Machine Works, maker of high-end, indestructible parts. The Brooks saddle and the Dapper Dan grips, both leather, provide unparalleled feel and an authentic patina. The BMX Crankset is complemented by front and rear drum breaks from Sturmey Archer, and the shock-absorbing Schwalbe "Fat Frank" cruiser tires provide smooth-rolling, urban-friendly traction and durability.

The wheels are hand-built in Brooklyn with Swiss DT spokes, and the rear wheel is equipped with bike pegs, so that you can carry (at least) one of your posse home at the end of the night.

Core77 was founded in Brooklyn in 1995, and one of the reasons why the bike project is so exciting for us is that it both recognizes the history of the company and celebrates small manufacturing in the area.

As part of the product launch, the Apple Store SoHo New York will be presenting a Live "Meet the Designers" Event on Saturday, July 11th at 3pm, featuring the story of the Core77 Dutch Master Bicycle. Designers and builders of the bike will take the audience through the design and development of the Dutch Master, showing video and process shots of production and construction of the bike. The Apple Store SoHo New York is located at 103 Prince Street. Following the event, the Dutch Master will be on display in the lobby of the trend-setting Ace Hotel New York, located at 20 West 29th Street, for one week, from July 11 through July 18th.

Review: Quality Wine Tasting, Thursday July 9, 2009 at Tiny Bistro

Last night's wine tasting and food pairing (wine courtesy of Hop City and food courtesy of Tiny Bistro/Figs & Honey) was out-fucking-standing.

The wines - a sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot gris, merlot, grenache, and a cabernet - were all exceptional (thank you, no blends). The sauvignon blanc was my favorite...only a subtle taste from the barrell. The chardonnay was unusually aromatic and the pinot gris excellently paired. The reds were nothing to shake a stick at either...particularly the surprisingly good merlot.

The sommelier - extremely knowledgable, entertaining, and instructive.

The food - out of this world - a light tuna roll with cilantro and vegetables; mixed greens with walnuts, bleu cheese and a lemon and olive oil vinagerrette; [pear?] on puff pastry with a rose water and semisoft cheese topping; fresh goat cheese stuffed figs with bacon; and pork tenderloin skewers with spiced pumpkin.

The actual pairing of the food by chef Robert Haan was quite remarkable - neither the wine nor the food were overpowering of one another. Nothing too heavy, too spiced, or anything that lingers on the palete.

I would highly recommend Tiny Bistro/Figs & Honey for any/all catering events. Will try their regular menu next week. Check out upcoming wine/beer events on the calander.

David Foster Wallace Biography Gets Publishing Deal

Since the suicide of author David Foster Wallace last September left the literary community reeling, two writers have tried to grapple with his oft-emotionally turbulent life and celebrated career in the form of biographies: D.T. Max, who penned a lengthy New Yorker article on the author after his death, and David Lipsky, who wrote one for Rolling Stone. As of last week, though, only Max's proposal earned a publishing deal, while Lipsky's remains unsold.

Max's proposal sold to Viking Press at auction and is slated to hit bookstores sometime in 2011. Max told the U.K.'s Guardian he plans to write the book "in the form of an argument" and he doesn't want it to run too long. "I didn't think it was the right way to tackle David Foster Wallace--it's a little paradoxical because he wrote such big books himself," he told the paper.

Lipsky's proposal for a biography, on the other hand, would be based on a series of audio tapes from when he joined Wallace on a book tour in 1996. An anonymous editor showed concern that turning that idea into a formal book might prove difficult, though it would allow readers "to kind of hear that incredible music again: the sound of David Foster Wallace at full tilt."

In other DFW news, patient readers began testing their literary stamina this past Sunday with the kickoff of the Infinite Summer project, in which folks will read, ruminate and weigh in on Wallace's brick of a 1,079-page novel, 1996's career-defining Infinite Jest. Readers will brave the novel with a goal of reading 75 pages a week for 93 days. Godspeed, y'all.Bon

Likely to spill onto the Wisconsin music scene as explosively and harmonically as the band name implies, Volcano Choir is making its debut Sept. 22. The side project of Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and the guys of Collections of Colonies of Bees is described "experimental," "textural" and "landscapey," according to Vernon. Meanwhile, the album title sounds aptly suitable: Unmap.

The collaboration of members, all of whom reside in America's Dairyland, has been taking place for three years, but ultimately came together in one November 2008 weekend. Don't count on taking in lines of verbosity, though: Vernon said it's less about the lyrics and more about instrumentation. Unmap is set to be released through Jagjaguwar.

Dirty Projectors' van flipped outside of Detroit, MI on their way up to Toronto. Although the crash was serious, we're happy to report that all members of the band have been safely discharged from the hospital. The band will be flying home to New York in the morning to regroup and rest. Unfortunately, the band will have to cancel Toronto and Montreal. A personal hero of mine, Joe Pug, will be playing the drunken unicorn this saturday in support of his critically acclaimed debut album "Nation of Heat" ! Pug's wistful folk stylings will open for Horse Feathers and follows local indie-pop/ambient singer/songrwiter Nerdkween. Check out some snippets of his bio and album reviews below. The day before his senior year as a playwright student at the University of North Carolina, Joe Pug sat down for a cup of coffee and had the clearest thought of his life: I am profoundly unhappy here. Then came the second clearest.

Pug packed up his belongings and drove the longest route possible to Chicago. Working as a carpenter by day, the 23 year-old Pug spent nights playing the guitar he hadn't picked up since his teenage years. Using ideas originally slated for a play he was writing called "Austin Fish," Pug began creating the sublime lyrical masterpiece that would become the Nation of Heat EP.

The songs were recorded fast and fervently at a Chicago studio where a friend snuck him in to late night slots other musicians had canceled. He was short on money, but his bare-boned sincerity didn't require much more than a microphone and it dripped off of each note he sang.

In May of 2008, Pug played the first headlining slot of his young career to a sold out crowd at Chicago's storied Schubas Tavern. Two weeks later he released the Nation of Heat EP, which has garnered near-universal critical acclaim and established him as one of the most respected songwriters of his generation. Pug has since played shows with Todd Snider, Susan Tedeschi, Kasey Chambers, and James Hunter. He plans to release his debut full length record in 2009.

After a severely blown-out-of-proportion tornado warning Sunday evening, we once again made the short trek down Moreland, past the glowing red skull of L5P's Vortex, and around Metro's Happy Donuts to the indie rock mainstay known affectionately as the earl. Indie-pop/shoegaze sweethearts The Pains of Being Pure At Heart were playing their second appearance in Atlanta to a (near?) sellout crowd of both twenty-something hipsters and aging fans of early ninety's pop-rock (read: The Cure, etc). The band began ferociously - lead by their omnipresent wall-of-sound rhythm guitar - with none slowing until well after their encore. The crowd was clearly versed in TPBPH's Feb 2009 self-titled release and was thoroughly enthralled by a set which included a few new tracks !

We met Kip (guitar/vocals) and Peggy (keys/vocals) in the front bar after the show and both were i) super excited to draw a (near?) sellout crowd on a soggy sunday night in a town best know for hip hop (770 / Ludacris stage banter notwithstanding) and bible thumping and ii) that the guys at the earl - including the perpetually spot-on sound guy - showed them a good time beforehand...feeding them and even providing 4, count 'em, four drink tickets :) Believe it or not, Peggy has (humbly) managed to hang on to her (online) dayjob during the tour and Kip was really interested to hear about Atlanta's bustling indie rock scene. Both - of course - are ardent fans of Deerhunter (Peggy is "...in love with Bradford") and Cox's side project Atlas Sound and had heard a little about up-and-comers Manchester Orchestra. In hindsight, I should have mentioned Atlanta's equivalent to Broken Social Scene, The Constellations, and the lively garage rock crowd - a la, The Howlies (I all but assumed they had heard - or more likely seen - the on stage antics of the Black Lips, now banned from India!). At any rate, the guys were super nice and super appreciative of the strong turnout. The energy was high and, really, in a live show that's the most you can expect or ask for - the rest just kind of comes with it.

Midtown West's bustling arts & boutique district (circa Marietta St @ Howell Mill) recently opened the second leg of its highly anticipated beer-muda triangle (along with the indimenticabile Octane, and soon-to-be 5 Seasons Brewery).
Hop City is craft beer and wine store specializing in hard-to-find domestic and belgian beers. I stopped by last Tuesday as owner Kraig Torres was unloading boxes of sudsy goodness around his new digs. Friendly, courteous, and devastatingly knowledgeable, Kraig informed me about their <$100 Alligash torpedo kegs and even recommended a reasonably priced belgain triple...yum. Like their nice selection of domestic wines, beers are arranged by style (rather than brand) to indulge your experimental side. Apart from their epic selection, Hop City boasts a (free) frequent shopper program patterned in the spirit of Netflix and Apple's iPod genuis app. Users rate their newest selections on the website and automatically recieve recommendations and discounts for their likely favorites. Brilliant ! With 1,000 varieties of beer, 800 varieties of wine, and a 12-door refrigerator of glorious 4 degrees C, Hop City is sure to be a boon to Midtown West and as much an Atlanta institution as the Brickstore. Kudos.

Review: David Sedaris April 15, 2009 - Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center

A man. A podium. A microphone.

That's all it took to enthrall a sellout audience at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center thursday night. NPR / New Yorker faithful hung on every word as the indimenticabile David Sedaris regaled the audience with new and unpublished short stories ranging from unexpected abdominal lipomas to farting stewardesses (see image above). My favorite was one about him and Amy singing Kookaburra as children (much to the lament of their underwear-clad father)...which rapidly segued into a wistful monologue about stove burners and various trips throughout Australia. Wholly engrossing, delightfully entertaining.

DS was even kind (and mabye foolishly ambishous) enough to stick around for a solid 2 hrs of chit-chat/book signing with the entire (2,750...sellout) audience. We kept checking to see if his trademark cheshire cat smile would wane as he approached the second hour of small-talk, but he was a clearly a class act.

...And if you were wondering if there was any truth to his piece in last month's New Yorker, you can rest assured that my friend left the signing table with hotel lotion bottle in hand ;-)

This month's TNT coincides with the World Barista Championship (YES, in Atlanta!) !!! In honor of this very special occasion, Octane is having a NCAA tournament-style latte art throwdown !

1. The format will be a Capp-Off. An officiator will pull a shot and split it between two capp mugs. Two competitors will stream and pour simultaneously on opposite ends of the machine. Judges will quickly decide a winner.
2. Their will be a bracket system quite similar to the NCAA basketball tournament. Match-ups will be chosen at random. Winner of first round goes to second round, etc.

4. The bracket structure will allow for maximum amount of competitors, yet simultaneously not last 5 hours. The match-ups will be rapid fire.

Review: Fri April 10: Dan Deacon at masquerade

Disappointed. It was a soggy Friday night and things did not start well.
Dan Deacon Ensemble - originally slated to play Eyedrum and later moved to accommodate more fans - were to follow three (count 'em, three) opening acts for an all ages show at the Masquerade. Herein lies the problem.

All four bands (according to Preston at KissAtlanta) were scheduled to play from 9:00 through 11:50. The show was running behind and everything was pushed back 15 min, putting Dan and the boys on stage for a meager 11:05 to 12:05 runtime. I arrived around 10:30 to hear the last 30 min of the Future Islands (I believe). It was a respectable set - a little too euro-synth for me, but still a lot of energy. After setting up the 20 piece ensemble, a markedly irritated Deacon didn't take the stage (floor) until 11:30-ish. Management agreed to push the show-close to 12:20 (i. in an attempt to stay close to legally required midnight cutoff for all-ages shows and ii. to let Afterlife get started from 12-3), but when the ensemble showed no signs of slowing at 12:25, the house sound was cut (ouch!). Dan's screen guy posted "They Shut Us Down" "Don't Ever Come Here Again" and a small riot ensued - drinks were thrown, shoving was perpetrated...
Who's to blame? The crowd was surprisingly young, so the midnight cutoff would have been pretty unavoidable. DD ensemble didn't appear to drag their feet setting up and all the other bands were pretty much running behind too.

My opinion: 2 opening acts is tight for a 3 hr show, but 3 is just ridiculous. Locals "Mini Destroy" were the only band on the bill not touring with DD, so I'd assume squeezing them in kinda threw a wrench into things. Masq management and DD touring management didn't handle the situation poorly, it was set for failure from the start. Train wreck. Slow motion.

On the bright side, DD Ensemble were pretty good. The drums were glorious - chest pounding. DD however, clearly wasn't feeling it. Minimal banter, minimal crowd participation. Highlights include Of the Mountain and Snookered off the newly released Bromst. One word Dan, Corndog-O-Rama...2009. Not too late...

Review: Deerhunter & Black Lips - Thurs April 2, 2009 at 529

Local heros Deerhunter and Black Lips played a benefit concert Thursday night at 529 for longtime friend Bobby Ubangi (aka B Jay Womack) who was diagnosed with stage IV small cell lung cancer last year. Both bands interrupted an extensive US/European tour to play an impromptu homecoming for a crowd one or two orders of magnitude smaller than they normall draw. The show - to my knowledge - wasn't announced until the last week in March, so those not attending (or like me, going awol from) the Neko Case show at the Variety were treated with probably the last chance to see either of these bands at a venu smaller than the the VP.

A hundred or so were in attendance, and a band called Barrecudas opened, apparently playing their first show. "From the Gulf shore", the Barrecuds played a garage rock-stylized classic rock in the spirit of AC/DC (Brian Johnson flat cap notwithstanding). Their set was pretty fairly solid and a good warmup for Deerhunter. Apart from the fact that a couple of d-bags neanderthals were shouting "hurry up and play" all through soundcheck, Bradford Cox and company were absolutely lucid. The highlight of the show occurred during the cresendo-ing instrumental portion of "Nothing Ever Happend" - with intricate laser lighting bathing the audience in red and green dot patterns (courtesy of deerhunter or property of 529? anyone?) The set (including Agoraphobia and Little Kids - hooray!) was nothing short of phenomenal. Black Lips played next to a crowd eagerly awaiting a chance to let loose after their markedly less intimate show last year at the variety. No dresses, blood, urine, or man-kissing, but the Black Lips played with the deliberate fury of band wholly in its element. Again, solid and rawkus. A bargain at twice the price.

Review: Harlem Shakes "Technicolor Health" and Black Lips "200 Million Thousand"

The Harlem Shakes have come a long way since their self-titled debut EP, Burning Burthdays. Opening for the likes of the Walkmen and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the Brooklyn-based indie rock quartet have honed their sound from somethig reminiscent of an upbeat Deathcab to a sound more akin to punkier Sunset Rubdown. In their newst LP Technicolor Health (Mar 09), a Clap Your Hands vocal infulence is most noticable, as is an increasing emphasis on electronic embellishments. Half the tracks on the album are upbeat, melodic, toe-tappers that'll have the hipster kids shaking in their Chuck Taylors. The rest are low-key gems that soon grow on the less tan active listener.

The Black Lips have also transformed themselves for their second major release, 200 Million Thousand. Following on the heals of their epically acclaimed Good Bad Not Evil (2007), the band reflects changes in the winds of the local Atlanta music scene. The band's quintessential brit-tinged garage rock was brought down a few notches in intensity, as an ambient influence (thank you Deerhunter) is made clearly present. Vocals echo early 90's modest mouse, as do the heavily drug-influenced lyrics. Still, not an album you'd play at a house party - or even one you'd play while you're kicking around the house - its commendibly cohesive. Lyrically exisistential, the melodics are fitting. A solid piece of work.

Moscow-born, Alaskan-raised and Brooklyn-based Olga Bell has some serious chops. Under the moniker “Bell”, she and her bandmates play an eclectic blend of indie electro rock. With the vocal delivery of bjork and phrasing reminiscent of [heart-throb] Leslie Fiest, Bell shapes a complex musical landscape. At times, wholly minimalist, her songs wax and wane from in both tempo and intensity. Excellent audio fodder for the hipster coffee shop around the corner…

When not moonlighting for Broken Social Scene, Elizabeth Powell fronts Land of Talk, a classic indie rock three-piece from Montréal. In 2008, the band released their first LP, Some are Lakes, under the production of none other than [gasp] Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon. Powell’s angelic voice sings with crystal clear delivery, in stark contrast to her earlier punk rock days [wondering if two LF references in one post is too many]. And she’s not just another pretty voice (and face), she can also tear it up on the guitar!

National Corndog Day coincides with the Saturday of the final 32 teams in NCAA basketball tournament (this year it’s March 21st). This Saturday is the only day all year that one can watch a quadruple-header of college basketball games (that’s a good 7-8 hours of college hoops) from start to finish without having to change the channel. NCD officially starts with the tip-off of the first game – 10 am Pacific/1 pm Eastern. To help pass the time, have fun with our friends, and to celebrate being blessed with such a thing as a college basketball tournament, we eat Corndogs.! Lots of Corndogs...

It is of great honor on NCD to complete the perhaps not so aptly named, "triple-double." If over the course of National Corndog Day, at an official NCD party, you consume 10 Foster Farms corndogs, 10 Pabst Blue Ribbon beers, and 10 "units" of tater tots (100 tots total) you have achieved the notorious "triple-double." It is a feat that has been seldom accomplished. For those a little wary of being able to complete the "triple-double," completing a "double-double" (choose which two) is also still a respectable feat."

Review: Clem Snide (Eef Barzelay) Wed Mar 11, 2009 - The Earl

For fans of Eef Barzely's bittersweet minimalist folk-whimsy, wednesday was a special night. Having reunited after an extended hiatus, the full band - Clem Snide - played the first show of their US/European tour in promotion of their newest album Hungry Bird on a unusually chilly march night at the earl. Eef - perpetually earnest - charmed the audience throughout the night with sheepish banter. 1 part vodka and 2 parts butterflies. Together, their playing was fairly tight; you could tell the band wasn't yet ready to venture too far from the path, though. A good portion of the show was filled with Eef's solo work, as well as that from the Rocket Science soundtrack - both, incredibly personal works - poignant and beautiful. The crowd slightly thinned after the openers, but a sizable audience (for Wed at the earl) remained for the end of Clem Snide's set. A rawkus round of cheering and a three song encore ensued - you could tell from their grins that they felt like they got their stage legs back after the past few years. Standouts include, "Well" "I Love the Unknown" and "Find Love".

NPR mainstay and heralded "This American Life" host/producer, Ira Glass, is planning production for his second film under the "This American Life" moniker. Glass will adapt the short story "Wenceslas Square" a story written by Arthur Phillips, which takes place in Czechoslovakia at the end of the Cold War. The story was first published as a collection of essays in Wild East: Stories from the Last Frontier, and featured in Episode 337 of the radio show This American Life. Hooray!

Yale alum and NYU Law (voluntary) dropout turned standup comic, Demetri Martin fashions himself the thinking man's comedian. His deadpan delivery and did-ya-ever-notice observational style is as acerbically sharp as it is brutally clever. Martin, a self-proclaimed fan of palindromes (words spelled the same both forwards and backwards) has astonishingly created a 224-word palindrome poem !

We're All Going To Die

Simon Høgsberg's newest photo collection, We're All Going To Die - 100 Meters of Existence is an existentialistic investigation into the connections we make between internal thought and external emotion. The work complements of his previous installation, The Thought Project, where Hogsberg presents a series of portraits, along with brief, introspective statements of the subjects' thoughts. We're all going to die was shot in Summer 2007 from a bridge overlooking a railroad platform in Berlin. 178 people were (unwittingly) captured in a 100 m wide image. The contrast between the subjects and the sullen, overcast sky is striking. The amount (and range) of pathos subtly smeared throughout the landscape is truly remarkable.

No one argues that our country was founded on a Christian code of ethics. What many don't realize (i.e. fail to acknowledge) is that the vast majority of these moral certitudes are commonly shared among the world's religions. Notions of property, theft, deceit, etc. are universally recognized. With the exception of certain colloquial religious beliefs - vestiges of compulsory practices adopted long-ago for reasons no longer applicable - these are, by-and-large, universally accepted. The latter, are particularly prevalent in less progressive (i.e. sociologically isolated) regions of the country (i.e. the South). In a secular government - and in the country facing increasing globalization - pragmatism must prevail over religious dogma. Accordingly, so-called Blue Laws (e.g. Sunday alcohol sales in GA) have no place.

matt (m.) ward performed on letterman tuesday in honor of his new release 'hold time' ! if you're the only person on the planet who hasn't streamed the album from the npr site, feel free to pick it up a copy (yes, artists get especially hit hard during a [gasp] recession). the LP slightly pales in comparison to the brilliance of 'transistor radio' and (to a lesser extent) 'post war', but for the m. ward neophyte, it's yet another ingot of musical americana...splashed with a bit more fluorishes (via the bevy of guest accompanyments). like many visual artists, ward's talent (and deliberate propensity) for making a lot out of as little as possible, is his greatest talent. kudos.

"Objectified is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets. It’s about the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. It’s about personal expression, identity, consumerism, and sustainability.

Through vérité footage and in-depth conversations, the film documents the creative processes of some of the world’s most influential product designers, and looks at how the things they make impact our lives. What can we learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves?"
